Balmoral Garden Court Re-Design Project
This initiative began as a partnership project between GVHS and Interior Design Institute of BC.
A team of local interior designers worked with us to identify a social housing building in need of some “touch ups.” We chose Balmoral Garden Court, an inner-city family and seniors building with a bit of an “institutional” feel to it.
Our shared goal was to enhance tenant quality of life by creating friendly, bright spaces where people would feel welcome and secure.
Working with our residents, we identified a number of ways to meet these goals. Planned improvements included shared spaces for play, for family, for work, and for community gatherings.
Great progress has been made!
New flooring, millwork, lighting, furnishings, paint and cabinets. Look at the vibrant children/family zone area!
We also painted and replaced the flooring in the hallways throughout the building, and refurbished the seniors’ lounge with new paint, flooring and furnishings.
We’re almost there! The last phase of the Balmoral Garden Court Re-Design Project includes:
- Replacing the existing bike racks and adding more of them
- Installing a weather-proofed commercial-grade bike shelter that will look great and, more importantly, help extend the life of tenants’ bicycles by keeping them covered and dry
- Refurbishing the family zone area with interactive wall coverings (magnetic and chalkboard), toy storage, children’s tables, chairs and stools
- Painting and/or installing large floor numbers outside the elevators on every floor, making it easier for both seniors and children to navigate the building
